the job search, or, update
It's been about a month since I posted anything here. I'm trying to keep this blog rolling but it's definitely difficult given that I don't like writing things all that much. My friend Leora has decided to keep people updated from her new location in Tel Aviv and has inspired me to update you as to where I've been the past few weeks.
Many of my friends have left or are leaving the Providence area. We had a big sendoff for my friend Sam W. That's her below with the wine glass...
I then went with Sam and friends to her house in CT for a final sendoff. We enjoyed lots of wine, swimming and cat hair. Sam was continuing on to Colorado via Chicago to begin a 6 month teaching job. On a whim I hopped in the car with her and her friend Catherine to enjoy a 17 hour drive to Chicago.
Millennium park is pictured below. This sculpture is known as 'the bean' and let me tell you, it's AMAZING. I spent a week in Chicago with my high-school friend Arielle. I like to think of Chicago as a NYC that is not on amphetamines. Seems life is a bit slower paced there (and a bit cheaper too -- speed is expensive!).
I then hopped on a bus to Pittsburgh. The bus made it about 20 mins outside of Chicago before breaking down for an hour and a half on the side of the highway. Public transport is just lovely. But I made it, and Jon met me there to spirit me away to West Virginia for another week. See picture of 'blackwater falls' below. We did some touristy stuff like this and also enjoyed a 21st birthday celebration of a high-school friend of Jon's.
Just when I thought I had reached my limit on greasy WV diner food, we hopped in a car with another friend of Jon's (Mandy) and zipped up to New York City. Turns out that Mandy drives a stick shift and hates driving on major freeways, so I got to hone my stick shift skills on the NJ Turnpike! I also learned that you get foot cramps in stop and go traffic pressing on the clutch. Lessons in life.
Arriving in NYC we spent a lot of time sleeping on people's floors. Here's a picture of our last night in NY, in Sherry's boyfriend Dan's studio apartment.
But despite this, we did manage to get some hipster BINGO in at a bar in Williamsburg. It was quite exhilarating: Mandy (left) won a keychain and some other McDonald's toys and Jon won a cowboy hat.
Now I'm back in Providence, interviewing almost nightly for teaching jobs in Korea. Things are going well, it's just that the recruiters and the employers are often unreliable in terms of phone calls so this is getting dragged out a lot longer than it should be. I'll keep y'all posted as to my progress as well as posting any interesting new tidbits. Keep in touch/feel free to add comments or suggestions. xoxox
